Supplement to Gemmae antiquae caelatae

The major success of the book Gemmae antiquae caelatae encouraged Stosch to continue his studies on the subject of signed ancient engraved gems. Shortly after 1724, he started to commission drawings for the second volume of his book - a supplement. The first illustrations were made by Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1755), but later Johann Justin Preisler (1698-1771) documented several other signed intaglios and cameos for Stosch. The project dragged on for many years. The last artist working in Stosch's atelier - Johann Adam Schweickart (1722-1787) - is said to have produced a couple of illustrations and engravings for the book plates. Nevertheless, the project was never completed.

After Stosch's death, some of Schweickart illustrations, originally intended for the supplement to Gemmae antiquae caelatae, were reused in the luxurious edition of Johann Joachim Winckelmann's (1717-1768) catalogue of Stosch's gem collection published in 1760. Apparently, only a few copies of that edition were made; thus, the illustrations are scarcely known. In Krakow, there are all of them as well as about twenty drawings executed by Preisler for the Gemmae antiquae caelatae II project. Some examples are presented in the gallery below. Our goal is to collect, analyse and present them so that Stosch's vision would be fulfilled after many years of postponement. We also investigate why the second book never came out and identify the original gems intended for publication.
